Peat Moss

Now available bagged in a 3.8 cubic feet bag or bulk.

Peat PlusTM Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss is an horticultural grade 'blond' peat moss that is harvested in a sustainable way(1). The peat moss is sun and wind dried, tested for quality, and then double screened so you will have a consistent size.

One of most cost effective ways of soil conditioning. The Canadian Peat Moss Association's research has shown that sphagnum peat moss is an excellent soil amendment, top dressing for lawns, component for potting soil mix, root cuttings, and seed germination(2).

Peat PlusTM Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss can also save water and reduce loss of your valuable soil nutrients because absorbs so well. It can help clay soils by letting air and water to your plant roots. It can help sandy soils by holding water and nutrients.

Peat PlusTM Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss can cover a great deal of ground. Our 3.8 cubic foot bag of compressed sphagnum peat moss can cover approximately 180 square feet with 1/2 inch or 90 square feet with 1 inch.

(1)"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Our Common Future: Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (The Brundtland Report), 1987. Unlike other regions in the world, Canada has carefully controlled the harvesting of peat moss. There are 270 million acres in Canada and only 0.016% is being harvest. Peat moss grows 70 times faster than is being harvest. It only takes between 5 and 20 years to restore a peat bog to an ecologically balanced system.

Uses: Peat PlusTM Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss can help several type of soil conditions: clay soils, sandy soils, soils depleted of organic matter (humus), soils that are alkaline (our peat moss has a pH of approximately 4.5), soils poor in absorbing nutrients and water. You may have to add lime to counter balance the low pH.

For existing lawns: rake and use an aerator on the lawn, then top dress with 1/4 to 1/2 inche.

There are of course many other uses for peat moss. One of our favorite is as a base for compost. Peat moss is a great source of carbon and absorbs both odour and liquids. We have a local farmer using peat moss as bedding for horses.
